Where Halloween comes from
Halloween — "All Hallows' Eve" — is the evening before All Saints' Day on 1 November. Many of its customs trace back to Samhain, a Gaelic festival marking the end of the harvest, when the boundary with the spirit world was believed to be thin. Irish and Scottish emigrants brought the traditions to North America, where carved pumpkins replaced the turnip lanterns of Ireland and trick-or-treating grew into the modern holiday. Ireland has no Halloween holiday as such, but its October bank holiday — the last Monday in October — usually falls in Halloween week.
Days that follow Halloween

- 1–2 November – Día de Muertos: Mexico's Day of the Dead, with altars and marigolds; 2 November is the main day.
- Next up: Thanksgiving in the US and Christmas.
